The Diwaniyya & Ladies' Majlis

Men talk shoulder to shoulder. Women talk over coffee. Both deserve a place built for it.

☕

Inspired by Australia's famous Men's Sheds — but we did not need to import the idea. The Arab world has always had it: the diwan.

The Diwaniyya (المضافة)

A proper Arab mudafah at Golden Age Home: qahwa sada on the fire, backgammon and dama tables, a woodworking and repair bench, and open doors — for residents AND for men of the community over sixty. Come fix a chair, teach a grandson chess, or just hold court.

The Ladies' Majlis (مجلس الستات)

The women's equivalent, on its own schedule and space: tatreez embroidery circles, cooking the old recipes together, storytelling, and the kind of conversation that has held families together for generations.

Why it matters

Isolation is the quiet epidemic of old age. Research on shed-style programs shows measurable drops in loneliness and depression among older men. The diwan does the same work — in a form our elders already love.
